Understand The Courses

HSE require all employers to assess first aid requirements based on number of employees, sites, shift pattern etc. The courses contents are prescribed by the HSE.  All candidates must attend the full 6 hours (1 day EFAW) or 18 hours (3 days FAW) contact time, excluding breaks. Each candidate is continually assessed on each section of the programme by the tutor. The course assessment also includes multiple choice question tests during the courses. Revalidation period for those courses is 3 years.

Qualification Frameworks

ITC Certificate in Emergency First Aid at Work (SCQF Level 6 Qualification number R263 04)
ITC Certificate in First Aid at Work (SCQF Level 6 Qualification number R262 04)

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on those courses. Bigger groups can be catered for, but the ratio must not exceed 12 students per instructor.

First 6-hours content is Emergency First Aid at Work                


On successful completion of training candidates should be able to: 

• Understand the role of the first aider including reference to: 
  - the importance of preventing cross infection; 
  - the need for recording incidents and actions; 
  - use of available equipment; 
  
  
• Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
• Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
• Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including the use of an AED;
• Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
• Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
• Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock;
• Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).

Further 12 hours content for First Aid at Work

• Administer first aid to a casualty with: 
  - injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries;
  - chest injuries; 
  - burns and scalds; 
  - eye injuries; 
  - sudden poisoning; 
  - anaphylactic shock; 
  
  
• Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes).
